What if Higher Education changed?

COVID has brought new opportunities in the education space. Recently I completed a chapter focused on the future of equity in higher education – I wondered what this would look like in a post-pandemic world. I quickly realised that, even with my futurist experience and diverse connections, I could not speak for all in the equity space. My indigenous colleagues have taught me that it is not my place to talk for others when I only have my own story to tell. Who am I to lead the conversation in spaces other than my own? It led me to ponder the following:

  • Who are we not hearing from? Why? 
  • How are we moving towards improved equity and inclusion practices? 
  • Where are our blindspots and biases?
  • What actions will we take in response to these questions?

With these thoughts in mind I reached out through my networks and asked you for your What if… responses. Only ten of them will be mentioned in the book chapter but I promised I would share these and now seems the appropriate time. Here are the questions that were submitted about the future of higher education.

  1. Yes I think technology can support learning in new ways. I am about to write a post on my favourite futures resources of the year and one of the is Gerd Hiemstra who talks about the dangers of technology dehumanising. How might we keep a balance, if indeed a balance is needed?

    thanks for sharing – and asking the questions.

    My thoughts – Increase experiential / experience-based learning. Learning needs to get out of our heads and into practice simulations so we feel engaged and in control of our learning.

    We need safe spaces where we can make mistakes because we learn so much from them.

    Along with this, we need student-led learning, where I’m in control. What’s the best time of day you learn? Morning, evening?
    How fast do you learn – we need to alter them speed for different subject matter for different people. How often can learners practice – many of us want to become proficient in skills but classes move as a pace leaving us behind.

    Technology can help with many of these issues – its time we leaned in to smarter ways to engage with our learning.
